Assessment of Specific Learning Difficulties such as Dyslexia / Dyscalculia

For who?

School-aged children and adolescents 

What is it?

An assessment that compares your child’s overall intelligence (intellectual ability) to their academic skills in areas such as reading, spelling and maths. The assessment examines whether or not a child is under-achieving / overachieving in a specific academic area relative to what you would expect for their age and level of intelligence.

Autism Spectrum Disorder Assessment

For who?

Toddlers, children & adolescents

What is it?

The term Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) describes qualitative differences and impairments in social interaction, social communication and social imagination combined with restricted interests and rigid and repetitive behaviours. Autism spectrum disorders are diagnosed in children, young people and adults if these behaviours meet the criteria defined in the International Classification of Diseases of the World Health Organisation, tenth revision (ICD-10) and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders fifth edition (DSM-5) and have a significant impact on function.

Intellectual Assessment

For who?

Pre-schoolers, school-aged children and adolescents

What is it?

An Intellectual assessment looks at your child’s level of learning ability compared to other children their age. It is sometimes called a cognitive assessment or an IQ assessment.

Developmental Assessment for Infants and Toddlers

For who?

Children aged between 1 – 42 months

What is it?

A developmental assessment can help understand how your child is developing compared to other children their age. It looks at different areas of child development such as how they communicate, learn and move physically (motor skills). 

This multi-disciplinary developmental assessment is carried out by Psychology and Speech and Language Therapy or Psychology and Occupational Therapy.

Post-Diagnostic Consultation

For who?

Parents who have received a diagnosis for their child at Listowel Children's Services or elsewhere

Why would parents need this?

Thorough feedback is given following diagnoses and time is always given to answer any questions you may have. However, it is often an intense time with a lot of new information and feelings to process. After receiving a diagnosis for your child / adolescent, you may have many different thoughts, feelings, worries or goals that you want to achieve.

Developmental Co-ordination Disorder

For who? 

School-aged children and adolescents

What is it?

An assessment of a child’s planning and execution of motor skills and their impact on daily living skills, academic skill / school productivity, leisure and play motor skills. A child’s performance in these motor skills is compared to their overall development to see if their difficulties are explained by a specific developmental co-ordination disorder (DCD) or if there are other reasons that may better explain their difficulties such as a general learning disability, an attention disorder, or a social communication disorder.
